The Concept of the "New Woman" in the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938)

The diploma thesis is focused on the concept of the "New Woman" in the first Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938). The "New Woman" is understood as a discursive construct acquiring various meanings. In this work, I reveal wide range of these meanings and identify images of the "New Woman", which indicate what was hidden under this concept. The aim of the thesis is to find an answer to the question of what contents the concept was acquiring at a given time. To achieve this goal, I use critical discourse analysis to analyze materials (books, periodicals) from the era of the first Czechoslovak Republic. I also place the topic of the "New Woman" in the necessary context, which focuses on the legal and social status of women in the first Czechoslovak Republic and the origin of the concept and its elaboration by western authors.
